Image of former entrance to Bas-reliefs on Seine side of Palais de Tokyo and the Musee d’Art Moderne facing the Seine (The sculpture holds the coat of arms, the blazon of the city of Paris : the ship symbolizes since the 14th century the powerful corporation of the Water Merchants whose chief was also the Maire, called “Prévôt” at that time. The motto of Paris is “Fluctuat nec mergitur” (Paris floats, but never sinks). The lilies are symbolizing the monarchy and the house of Capet, as Paris was also the capital of the kingdom.)
