Caveau de la Huchette for dancing
Gay and Lesbian Paris
Paris night
life ideas - cabarets
Where to find
evening entertainment has been a recent reader's request. Here are a few
shows that I have either attended or heard about:
le Caveau
des Oubliettes*
At the end of
WWII, "jazz invaded the cellars and hot spots of Paris"..... After
passing the grisly part of the guillotine and the bar, you descend the
cellar's stone steps to the very intimate rooms for jazz; each night a
different variety.
My advise to
get a seat for the 10 p.m. show: have dinner between 8 p.m. and 9:30 and
head over to the cave.
Be there about
9:45 p.m. An excellent funk band was playing on the Saturday night we
attended. There should have been five members of the group, but only
four made it. Unfortunately, the piano player had his piano stolen that
day.

The history
Bistrot de
la Huchette
I heard about
this from a Miami pilot, a/k/a Bruce, as a great place for dancing. Be ready
it is not your standard bistrot; it is a bar with a tiny dance floor.
Mousse and Chero will probably pair you up with others so that by the
end of the evening, everyone knows everyone else! Fun place for drinks,
Latin atmosphere in the Latin Quarter; dancing salsa, bachata, merengue, etc.
Sangria is
their house, homemade specialty for 6 euros.
Open seven
days a week (7/7) 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.

p.m. to 9 p.m.

Cabaret
Michou
If you like
"kitsch" and if you have seen the film "Cage aux folles" from 1978, you
can now see the real thing.
The male
greeters and servers already are wearing their make up; they just have
to change into costumes to lip sync favorite music artists over the last
decades.
The master of
ceremony, Michou, usually makes an appearance at the show. You will
recognize him by his hallmark blonde hair and large blue glasses.
We had a very
good dinner, drinks are included. The earlier you arrive, the better
your chances of having your choice of meal (95 euros includes the show,
dinner and drinks).
The hall is
intimate and consists of a small stage, benches and chairs along long
eating tables. The show is a lot of fun and very entertaining.

English comedy club
Laughing Matters Presents
If you are
looking for comedy and entertainment in your native tongue or the
English you have picked up, I can recommend a comedy club, la Java. They
used to be at the Hôtel du Nord, famous for the movie, along Canal
Saint-Martin.
Karl Beer's
gang has stayed in the 10th arrondissement, but moved to rue du Faubourg
du Temple. I haven't checked it out, but this is what it says on their
website about this location:
"... a genuine 1930's dance hall where once upon a time Jean Gabin would
trip the light fantastic with Edith Piaf. The man behind the bar is
Christophe who with his father Jacques has been running the place for
decades. Ghosts abound!"

Paris-Ile-de-France recommends
The
Paris-Ile-de-France tourist office
recommends the following shows that will continue until 2010:
Paradis
d'Amour is a new cabaret show that began in
2001, making it the first show of its kind in the 21st century! It's
only natural, then, that the new show should lead the audience through
the history of love, through its legends, up to the present and into the
future... It is a veritable firework display of ballet, French elegance
and joie de vivre: from the 1920s and 30s in the wine cellars of
Germain-des-Prés to the post-war years and the sexual liberation of the
1970s. Without forgetting the future... These are just some of the many
sketches from an exceptional team of 25 young dancers, accompanied by
international performers. More information on 01 43 25 28 28

Bonheur,
c'est magique The famous Lido cabaret presents
its new spectacle: Le Bonheur (Happiness). The line-up features a whole
host of all-singing, all-dancing numbers in a magical atmosphere. 4
stages make up the show "La femme" (The woman), a sensual representation
of love and femininity. "I love Paris": a journey into the heart of
Paris, the city of fashion, the night-time city, starting up on the
rooftops and continuing through haute couture and long Parisian nights.
"Indian myths": Shiva's tears and rainbow horses, a dreamy, spiritual
journey through the traditional myths and festivals of Indian culture.
"Stars' dreams": a tribute to the grand classics of cinema and cabaret:
Marilyn meets the Matrix, and Chaplin comes face-to-face with Fellini...
