Questions to ponder
Do you know how to
lance projectiles at an adversary in close proximity?
What is a machine?
Do you know how to
calculate the perfect trajectory for catapulting a piano without hurting any
spectators?
Is it possible to
spread nutella from the jar onto a piece of toast and transport it between red
curtains to a waiting youngster?
While rotating, how
does one beat drums that remain stationary?
These and more
questions, if you manage to see it all in one day! are answered at the Grand
Palais, one of the venues for the 2006 Paris quartier d'été.
Types of machines
Some of the
exhibitions (over 100 are presented):
Water canon, egg
canon, piano catapult, apple eating machine of Catherine Deneuve's apples,
Nutella spreading machine, sake machine, pillow-throwing machine, etc.
For those readers who
read French, visit the French website to read the
list of
machines (page 3).
The most important
events have specific time, such as the piano catapult and the water canon; the
others are spontaneous and seen by chance. Follow either the crowd or the actors
in their orange shirts. Whatever you see, you will enjoy!
What is the Grand
Répertoire?
This concept of the
project, the Machine, was born at the beginning of the 90's. The street
theater company, Royal de Luxe, consists of construction workers, technicians,
sculptors, street theater stage hands and designers, etc. who decided to
collaborate on creating their dreams, the most wildly imaginative machines --
neither resin nor plastic is allowed.
The additional goal of
the Machine is to promote and to educate towards a profession in spectacles.
