History in the 5th arrondissement

Square Viviani

The first French Labor minister (1906-1910) is the namesake of this square. The property borders the church Saint-Julien le Pauvre (constructed in 1170 on the ruins of a previous 6th century church destroyed during a 866 Norman invasion. The park is home to the oldest tree in Paris, an acacia from 1601.

Some of the items that you will see in the park include remnants of a balustrade, pinnacles and chapiters (capitals of a column) possibly from the Notre-Dame de Paris across the river. The well situated to the right of the entrance of the Saint Julien date from the 12th century. It was located in the interior of the sanctuary before the demolition of the façade in 1675.
