Gare
d’Austerlitz
In 1838 an agreement was reached to link a railway between Paris and
Orléans; the two cities were linked in May 1843.
“One could say that on that day Paris reached to the suburbs of
Saint-Marceau,” wrote Victor Hugo. Actually the railroad brought
industrialization to this area. The station was short-lived and the
architect, Renaud, built a new station between 1863 and 1869.
The famous hall of iron (Polonceau system) is 280 meters long, setting a
record for an open port at the time of 52 meters. The décor is sober,
the stone emphasizes the rhythm of the skeletal structure.
The metro first appeared within the station in 1906, one of the firsts
for the Parisian train stations.
Viaduc d'Austerlitz
Constructed
based on a competition from 1903. The length set a new record of 140
meters , while the Alexandre III bridge was only 107.5 meters.
Work began in
November 1903 and concluded in December 1904. The decoration of the
pillars is the work of the architect, Camille Formigé.
The bridge had
to be reinforced in 1936 to bear the weight of additional metro cars.
