Going to Auver-sur-Oise and want to buy a ticket before you reach Gare Saint-Lazare or Gare du Nord? Buy a day pass ticket (Mobilis) at a metro station (Zones 1-5). If you use the ticket machine, the metro station should have one that accepts coins and bills and one that accepts credit cards with the smart chip. If you are using a credit card without the chip, the agent will process your non-chip credit card (USA type, for example).
This ticket will be good for the day on any bus, metro, tram, or RER, within the five zones (Paris center is zones 1 and 2).

Buying a ticket from a machine: Be sure to have enough change in Euros. The machines do not accept paper bills nor do they accept American credit cards (no microchip). The round-trip costs more than 10 euros, and on Saturday mornings some ticket windows are not yet staffed. (I speak from experience as I sit in my room in Paris when I should be in Auver-sur-Oise! Not enough change.)
Gare du Nord is a large station; give yourself plenty of time to get from the Metro to the SNCF platforms.
Hi Anne, Ouch! Sorry to hear about the train/ticket/credit card situation. For future reference to Colleen’s Paris readers, read about buying a five zone Mobilis ticket. As to the green ticket machines, the machines are back to back and there should be one that takes bills. I will check on this. That is true about the American credit cards. I have been told that not having the smart chip is better. Using the regular credit card is okay but is less secure: no one ever asks for your ID. At least with a PIN, using the card is personalized. Let’s hope the US banking system upgrades their credit cards soon. Read more about credit cards. What the ticket machine looks like and additional information from Transilien. I hope you still have a chance to catch the direct train on Sunday. Colleen
