The Food Lover’s Guide to Paris: Tempting!

    December 3, 2019 /

When is the last time you read a food guide in one sitting? The Food Lovers's Guide to Paris is the first food book I ever read cover to cover in one day. I can personally recommend it and say, "delightfully delicious".  You are introduced to the book with a casual overview of then and now and reassured that French cuisine is here to stay. The guide is simply laid out and begins with a map and arrondissement locations of places mentioned in the guide. In the "How-to-Guide" section Helen Massy-Beresford gives essential courtesy tips. She then moves shows you to your table of dining or specialty shop pleasures with…

David Downie’s Parisian Love Affair with Food

    September 25, 2017 /

"A Taste of Paris, A History of the Parisian Love Affair with Food" is a fun book in David's style. David combines history, travelogue and a personal quest. David's quest this time: "What is it about the history of Paris that has made it a food lover's paradise?" You can follow his Paris food seduction from 53 BC to the present. Bringing Paris food history alive, David presents lots of written culinary activity between the 1300s and 1792 (end of the Ancien Régime) with all the King Louis's, their chefs and the chefs’ cookbooks. David takes us back to the barbarian Parisiis squatting, eating with no tableware and demonstrates how the…

    A Satisfying Taste of Paris

    February 13, 2016 /

Taste festivals came to Paris for the second time between February 11 and 14, 2016. I was at Taste of Paris under the nave of the Grand Palais today. Here is what you will find if you have tickets: Food experiments for purchase, some free tastings and a fun atmosphere. If you go early when they open at 11 am until about 12:30, there is a line outside that moves quickly and not long lines inside. If you arrive about 2:30 pm there is no line outside, but long lines inside for each food booth. We bought the basic entry ticket and purchased....

How did le Croque-Monsieur get its name?

    February 19, 2014 /

Le croque-monsieur (croak-missyou) is THE real French sandwich. It is not just a ham and cheese sandwich made with two pieces of bread. It is toasted and it is famous. Le croque-monsieur is one particular sandwich that has made it's way from the brasserie and bistro to the microwave in France. Diners take photos of meals exquisitely arranged on the plate. Not many take a photo of a sandwich. These foods, however, do share something in common. They are available in the refrigerated section of the grocery store.

My Coiffeuse Wants A Cheesecake Recipe

    March 9, 2011 /

Sometimes when you travel, the urge to eat something familiar causes a craving. Craving cheesecake? When it came up in a conversation, I realized that (1) I wanted a piece of cheesecake and (2) it seems to be quite popular in Paris. I decided it is time for a cheesecake project: Start making a list of cheesecake places in Paris! Good ideas begin in the most unusual places. Hair salon conversation covers a wide range of subjects. Chez Glamour, my coiffeuse, Anita, and a client touched on light subjects:  actors and cheesecake. The women in the salon agreed that the transition from child actor to adult actor is difficult.  We…
